Let’s be honest: at first glance, a scent hide is just a small piece of plastic or metal. But if you’ve ever watched a dog work a complex search, you know that to them, it is the absolute center of the universe.
When we first started brainstorming gear at NosePop, we needed something that let us focus strictly on our motto: train. play. bond. We needed gear that was durable, functional, and solved real problems for handlers. That is exactly how the Snap-Pop was born, and why it has become the undisputed MVP of our training bags.
Dialing in the Design
Getting the Snap-Pop just right took some serious prototyping. We took the design to print bed and started obsessing over tolerances. The goal was a modular hide that clicks together with a deeply satisfying, ultra-secure friction fit.
We also wanted to solve the problem of finicky, exposed magnets that snap together or easily fall out. Our solution? We designed the Snap-Pop so that the magnets are fully embedded completely inside the plastic during the printing process. Because they are sealed within the walls of the hide, they will never fall out, they won't rust, and they give you a perfectly smooth magnetic surface that can be tucked anywhere.
The pieces need to hold together firmly enough to withstand an enthusiastic search, but pop apart smoothly in your hands when it’s time to reload or clean. Watching the final, functional design come to life—one precise layer at a time—never gets old!
Of course, no NosePop gear makes it to the storefront without passing rigorous inspection. Our Chief Testing Officer, Breck, puts all our prototypes through the wringer. If a piece of gear can survive our Alaskan Malamute declaring she has definitely found the source, we know it is ready for the real world.
A System for Clean Odor
In scent work, keeping odor clean is a top priority. If you use foundation items or larger, more complex hides, you know the struggle of scent contamination. You don't want the odor oil getting all over your gear, rendering it permanently hot.
That is where the Snap-Pop truly shines. Instead of placing scented swabs directly into our larger pieces, we use the Snap-Pop as a protective inner cartridge. The odor only ever touches the inside of the Snap-Pop, meaning your outer hides stay completely clean. When you're done, you simply pop it open, discard the swab, some warm soapy water, and you are ready for next time.
Color-Coding Your Searches
Because we print everything in-house, we can offer the Snap-Pops in a massive variety of bright, fun colors. But those colors aren't just for aesthetics—they are a built-in organizational tool!
We only train on three main scents, so here is a quick tip: I assign our odors in alphabetical order to the four favorite Snap-Pop colors we keep in our training bag. It makes it incredibly easy for me to remember on the fly:

Purple is our dedicated mixer, where we combine Q-tips to ensure we are training for any combination of odor we might encounter at a trial.
It takes the guesswork out of setting up complex searches and keeps cross-contamination to an absolute minimum.
The Perfect Partner: The Magnetic Pairing Tray
We are huge believers in pairing odor with food (or butter, if you ask Breck what she wants paired!). Why wouldn't we want to enforce that massive positive association with the scent? The more value the odor has, the more enthusiastically your pup will search.
Because we pair so frequently, we designed the Snap-Pop to integrate seamlessly with our Magnetic Pairing Tray. To make sure nothing slips during an active search, the tray utilizes a heavy-duty N52 rare earth magnet. This ensures that the tray stays firmly anchored to any magnetic surface while simultaneously keeping your Snap-Pop (or any other magnetic hide you might be using) locked in place.
Truthfully, we didn't need to use a magnet quite this strong—a smaller, weaker one would have technically worked. However, we aim to absolutely over-engineer our products to ensure they do not fail you in the field.
