While Breck understands the game and who knows exactly what she is looking for, Meatball—her best friend, frequent houseguest, and favorite "dog-in-law"—is at the very beginning of his journey. Left to his own devices, he is perfectly content just hanging out and rolling in the grass. We are actively teaching him how to tap into his natural canine instincts and realize that hunting for odor is actually a thrilling game.
Getting started in scent work can feel intimidating. You might see advanced dogs searching complex areas and wonder how they ever learned to find a single, tiny Q-tip. But the truth is, the foundation of scent work is incredibly simple, and you don't need any prior training experience to start.
You just need the right approach and the right gear.
The Secret to Starting: The Pairing Method
When we started with Breck and when we work with Meatball, we use a technique called "pairing." Pairing simply means presenting the target odor at the exact same time as a high-value food reward. Every time the dog eats the treat, they inhale the odor. Very quickly, their brain connects the dots: this specific smell equals a delicious reward!
This concept of pairing was actually fresh on my mind this past weekend. I was volunteering at a Happy Ratter trial, holding the practice rat for the new pups as I often do. I absolutely love watching a dog's initial reaction to the rat—whether they are a natural and interested without hesitation, or if they shy away. I love observing their body language and the interaction between the handler and the dog.
But this weekend was different. I started noticing how many handlers let their dog smell the rat, but weren't taking full advantage of the situation. They were forgetting to praise, treating too late, or delivering the treat far away from the rat tube. (Honestly, it made me think we might have to design something to help with pairing and rat tubes next—but I digress!)
It was a stark reminder of a core truth: pairing works on a simple principle, but it has to be timed correctly, especially in the beginning. It is absolutely critical that the dog experiences the target odor and the reward at the exact same moment. When a handler treats too late or delivers the reward away from the source, it creates confusion for the dog and frustration for the owner.
To eliminate that friction and make timing effortless, we designed the Shorty Scent Bowl.
We needed a tool that was rugged, incredibly stable, and designed specifically for accurate pairing. Flimsy gear that tips over or requires you to clumsily juggle a Q-tip and a treat only increases the chance of an error. I like to use at least 15 to 20 small treats placed directly on the grate and even delivering more right on top of that grate. The Multiple Bowl Challenge: As your dog gets the hang of it, having more than one bowl makes the next phase much easier. Because the game is not about finding just any bowl; it is about finding the correct bowl with the correct odor. Adding "cold" (empty) bowls forces your dog to rely entirely on their nose rather than just visual cues.

A quick safety note: This works wonderfully for Breck because she is not one to chew on random objects or destroy things once she finds them. If your dog is a heavy chewer or tends to shred their toys, we highly recommend keeping your scent bowls put away and only using them during actively supervised training sessions!
